The Beating of the Retreat Ceremony is a musical display which takes it existence from old military traditions of marching through the city streets warning soldiers to return to their billets for the night. The Beating of the Retreat Ceremonies, sponsored by the Departments of Community Affairs and Public Safety, take place throughout the island and are staged in the summer months from May through October. The Band and Corps of Drum of the Bermuda Regiment and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band begin the display at 9:00 pm sharply before the general public and an invited Guest of Honour.
